What To Do If You Have Dry Skin
By Jennifer Anne Paige
Whether you have healthy skin or not, there will come a point in time when you’ll have to deal with skin dryness. The thing with dry skin is that it can make your skin look unsightly. And if not treated properly, it may even be the cause of major skin problems. So what exactly should you do if you find yourself having dry, rough skin? A dry and rough skin is primarily the result of dead cells accumulating in the surface of your skin, which is the epidermis. When these dead cells are not sloughed off in time, they can make the skin appear dry and flaky. To remove those dead cells, you will have to exfoliate your skin. Exfoliation is the process of sloughing off dead skin cells to give way to new cells that make the skin look fresh and smooth. Applying a moisturizer after exfoliating will further improve the appearance of your complexion. If you have oily skin, avoid using moisturizers that are oil-based because they can cause breakouts. Also, never use soap when you’re washing your face. Soap contains ingredients that can dry the skin and even irritate it. Use appropriate products that are intended for facial use such as moisturizers and cleansers that can both get rid of dirt and oil and keep the skin soft, smooth, and well-moisturized. Your diet plays a big role in the health of your skin. If you add a variety of fruits and vegetables that help the skin lock moisture in, like watermelon, papaya, and carrots, you can prevent your skin from drying. Moreover, the importance of drinking at least eight glasses of water each day can never be overemphasized as this is the best way to maintain skin moisture. The next time you drink, you will notice that your skin has become vibrant and glowing. That’s the result of water nurturing your skin. By now, you should realize how much the sun could contribute to skin dryness. Aside from literally burning the skin from the outside, the sun can also bring damage to the skin from the inside. Ultraviolet radiation coming from the sun can stimulate the growth of free radicals, which in turn damages the skin’s cells, weakening its ability to retain moisture. Always remember to apply sunscreen every single time you are going outside to shield your skin from harmful UV rays. Aside from following some beauty and anti-aging tips, you can also start getting rid of a few of your habits that might be contributing to dry and dull skin. Smoking and drinking are two of those habits, so if you are a heavy drinker and a chain smoker, you better slow down a bit. According to studies, these two habits alone are enough to make your skin appear ten years older. Furthermore, it would also be a good idea to have your skin checked by your dermatologist on a regular basis.

Good article. Winter here in the midwest is an especially difficult time to keep your skin hydrated.
Very good article thanks for sharing, one of the problems i have and a lot of black people like myself is when winter time omes it seems our skin drys out and it cracks plus the skin feels rough. Thanks for the excellent share. David
Thank you for sharing this information, Jen. It seems that living inside the home, with forced hot air heating, also adds to making the skin dry. I find that using a moisturizer, before I go to bed, relieves the itching sensation on my legs. Keep up the good work. Best wishes. Frederick
