The Connection between Skin Problems and Nutrition

By Jennifer Anne Paige

Your Skin As An Organ

Did you know that the skin is the largest organ in the human body? Our skin plays a huge role in maintaining both our health as well as our appearance. We all want great looking skin and we spend a significant amount of money yearly, on different skincare products just find solutions to our skin problems and to look our best. Few people realize however, that in most cases, skin problems are a result of perhaps deeply rooted health problems.

The Skin Plays an Important Role

You see, our skin not only protects us from the elements, it also acts as a very complex detoxification system. Most toxins that are trapped within our bodies are excreted through the pores of our skin, thus the more toxins we have inside us, the more our skin reacts. Acne, eczema and other types of allergic reactions are typical signs that our immune systems are at work. This is amazing because our skin has the ability to let us know when something is wrong.

Eating Your Way to A Better Complexion

Now that you understand this very simple function of the skin, can you begin to now understand why there is a connection between the types of food we eat and having a healthy complexion? It is so true of the old saying, "you are what you eat". If you stuff yourself with unhealthy junk foods, all you're doing is starving your skin of essential nutrients that it needs to heal itself and to regenerate younger skin cells.

A Fruity Diet

If you suffer from constant skin problems such as eczema or skin inflammation, perhaps it is time for you to consider changing your diet to something more nutritious and healthy. Having that healthy glow on your skin has never been easier!

Eating more fruit and vegetables with high traces of vitamin C is one of the best ways of keeping skin inflammation as well as wrinkles at bay. Vitamin C that can be found in high traces, include foods and fruits like strawberries, oranges and one of the most potent of all, lemons! All these fruits play a big part in collagen production, which is crucial for attaining a young and smooth complexion.

Helping Your Body Detoxify

Going through a fruit diet detox every so often, can also help your skin with the detoxification process, helping your body remove these unwanted and potentially harmful chemicals.

During this detox, you should stay away from foods that are processed and that contain artificial sweeteners. Stay away from caffeine as well as foods that are high in saturated fats and oils (such as butter, processed oils like margarine), and consume more whole grains, vegetable and fruit juices as well as water.

This will really help to clear out your system. As a result, you will feel more energetic and your skin will look a lot more alive. If you have a dull complexion, you will be amazed with the results of such a detox diet. Regular detoxification's have also been known to reduce the appearance of cellulite.
