Going Through Hair Loss After Pregnancy Without Losing Your Head

By Jennifer Anne Paige

Pregnancy brings a lot of changes to a woman’s body. Aside from the baby bump obviously sticking out of your tummy, you will also notice that your hair is becoming thicker and shinier than before. If you’re already blessed with beautiful tresses, you would not believe that it can look better. The best part is having less hair fall. Your husband will be ecstatic because he doesn’t have to sweep off the floor and unclog the bathroom drainage with loose hair. But wait until you experience hair loss after pregnancy.

Soon enough, after you give birth to a healthy baby, everything will go back to normal - normal because you will start losing hair again. You may lose more than the usual before you got pregnant but it is not something you have to be worried about according to experts. Hair loss and pregnancy are both natural occurrences for women. So, if you are going through this, relax and find out why this is not something you have to go crazy about.

Why Hair Loss After Pregnancy Is Normal

It is normal to lose a lot of hair after pregnancy. You have to believe this even if you are pulling out a handful every morning. Remember what was said earlier about going back to normal after childbirth? This is what you need to understand about hair loss in women.

Women lose and replace a hundred of hair strands everyday but not all at the same time. This changes during pregnancy. At this time, a woman’s body goes through hormonal surge. The estrogen level is increased, making new hair to grow slower, thus, keeping old hair from falling off. This is the reason why women have thicker hair when pregnant. Sometime after giving birth, the hormones return to its normal level and you begin losing the hairs you stopped shedding for 9 months. Imagine how many hundreds of hair your head has to get rid of? You can expect pregnancy hair loss to last for 6 months to 1 year after giving birth, so you have to be extra patient.

How To Overcome Hair Loss After Child Birth

Even though losing your hair after pregnancy is inevitable, this doesn’t mean that you can’t do anything about it. While you are currently going through the big adjustment of having a baby around, you must realize that adding hair issues to your worries is not going to help. Here are some hair loss solutions that you will find very helpful when going through pregnancy hair loss.

Do's For Hair Loss Treatment

Get a new hairstyle. Consider having a shorter do and hair treatments like hot oil or hair spa. A stylish bob or short hairstyle will not only help reduce stray hair from falling off but it will also help boost your self-esteem. Most women feel less beautiful, especially those who are experiencing hair loss after pregnancy. Getting a makeover is a sure way to change how you feel about yourself and help you on your way to becoming a hot mama.

Eat healthy. Having a well-balanced diet is not only good for you (or your hair) but also for your baby, especially if you are breastfeeding. Load up on protein, iron, and omega-3 rich foods that are beneficial for the hair and scalp.

Breastfeed. Research says that breastfeeding your baby can postpone pregnancy hair loss. They discovered that mothers started shedding when they lessened breastfeeding and began weaning their babies after 6 months from birth.

Take vitamins and food supplements. Pre-natal vitamins are still advisable to take even after pregnancy. This is because of its good effects on the hair and skin. On the other hand, another type of vitamin that you can add to your daily intake is Vitamin H or B7 or most commonly known as Biotin. Egg whites probably have the highest Biotin content. However, concentrated supplements work better for faster hair growth and effective hair loss solution.

Get a massage. A scalp or hair massage is known to be effective in hair loss prevention. It improves blood flow on the scalp and stimulates hair growth. It is also a great way to relax and treat yourself after a hard labor.

Don’ts for Hair Loss Treatment

Don’t panic. Panicking will only stress you out and this can aggravate hair shedding. Stress is a big factor not just for hair loss in women but health in general. So, stop worrying about losing your tresses after pregnancy and start enjoying your baby and your new life as a mom.

Don’t be hard on yourself and your hair. You may not like how you look right now but this is not an excuse to stop taking care of yourself. This is also not the time to experiment on hair products as it might worsen the situation. Instead, go to your trusted hair stylist or hair expert for product recommendations. But the best way to treat hair shedding is by using mild hair loss shampoo and conditioner. It is advised not to use too much hair product like mousse and hair gels that can clog the pores on your head.

Don’t use heat. Save your hair from blow dryers and curling irons for the meantime. It’s a known fact that too much heat can damage your hair. These styling tools can also tug on your head and you don’t want to see how many strands you’ve lost when you do this. You can still look great without using these tools. A little sacrifice will do you good in the end.

These practical hair prevention tips should shed some light on your mane worries. Sometimes, all you need is to have someone tell you that everything is going to be alright. This is why it is important to surround yourself with people who love you during and after pregnancy. Do not forget that after all the hardships of childbearing, the greatest reward is seeing your beautiful bundle of joy all healthy and happy - and this makes everything worth it.
